David Mancini, associate professor of music theory, has been on the faculty of SMU since 1984. He served as head of music theory and composition at SMU from 1986 through 2002 and resumed that role in the fall of 2009. He served as director of the Division of Music from 2015 to 2021. Mancini holds a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Rhode Island College, Master of Music degree in music theory from the University of Cincinnati, and M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in music theory from Yale University. Mancini's teaching and research interests are the pedagogy of music theory, the analysis of Italian opera and the analysis of contemporary music. He has published articles on theoretical topics in the Journal of Music Theory and the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy and has given numerous presentations at meetings of national organizations such as the Society for Music Theory and the College Music Society, and regional organizations such as the Texas Society for Music Theory and the South Central Chapter of the College Music Society. In Italy, he has given guest lectures in Florence and at the University of Calabria. He retires as professor emeritus of music.
